Adder or Viper (Vipera berus)

The adder is the only venomous native snake in Suffolk. It has a noticeable dark zig-zag
pattern on the back and the body colour varies between creamy yellowish, dark greens,
greys, and black in males and is generally reddish brown in females. Adders usually grow
to about 60cm in length. The adder has, unfairly, gained a bad reputation in peoples
minds because it is venomous. It is actually a timid animal, and would rather hide than
bite.

The grass snake has an olive green body with some dark spots or flicks on the flanks and usually a
distinct yellowish and black collar behind the head. Grass snakes are Suffolk's largest snake growing to

batches of up to 40 eggs can be laid by one animal but many animals can lay at the one site.

grow to 30cm in length. The males tend to be greyer, sometimes have blue flecks on its flanks.
The females are browner to black on their backs with a black or darker brown line. The young are born
August to September are a golden/copper colour.

darker patch behind the eye. Frogs are about 10cm in lenght and there are many colour variants from yellow
to brown. The hind legs are noticeably longer than the common toad. Frogs lay spawn in February -March .
Common Toad (Bufo bufo)

The common toad is noticeable by its warty skin, brown in colour with shorter hind legs than the frog .
